Edge Shear Flows and Particle Transport near the Density Limit in the HL-2A Tokamak

Edge shear flow and its effect on regulating turbulent transport have long been suspected to play an important role in plasmas operating near the Greenwald density limit nG n_G . In this study, equilibrium profiles as well as the turbulent particle flux and Reynolds stress across the separatrix in the HL-2A tokamak are examined as nG n_G is approached in ohmic L-mode discharges. As the normalized line-averaged density nˉe/nG \bar{n}_e/n_G is raised, the shearing rate of the mean poloidal flow ωsh \omega_{\rm sh} drops, and the turbulent drive for the low-frequency zonal flow (the Reynolds power PRe \mathcal{P}_{Re} ) collapses. Correspondingly, the turbulent particle transport increases drastically with increasing collision rates. The geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs) gain more energy from the ambient turbulence at higher densities, but have smaller shearing rate than low-frequency zonal flows. The increased density also introduces decreased adiabaticity which not only enhances the particle transport but is also related to a reduction in the eddy-tilting and the Reynolds power. Both effects may lead to the cooling of edge plasmas and therefore the onset of MHD instabilities that limit the plasma density

Promotion by strontium fluoride of neodymium oxide catalysis of the oxidative coupling of methane

Catalytic performance measurements showed that CH4 conversion and C-2 selectivity were higher over SrF2/Nd2O3 catalyst than over pure Nd2O3 for the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM). XRD indicated that there was some exchange of F- and O2-, leading to the formation of tetragonal and rhombohedral NdOF phases during the catalyst preparation. After a certain amount of SrF2 was added to Nd2O3, the increase in surface basicity and conductivity, as well as the role of F- on the dispersion of surface active sites, would be favourable to a decrease in the secondary deep oxidation of methyl radicals and C-2 hydrocarbons, giving improved C-2 selectivity. Since there is a certain correlation between methane conversion and C-2 selectivity for an oxygen-limited OChl reaction, methane conversion is also expected to increase with the increase in C-2 selectivity

In situ confocal microprobe Raman spectroscopy results showed that O-2(2-), O-2(-) and O-2(delta-) (0 < delta < 1) adspecies formed on the O-2 pretreated cerium oxide sample when the temperature was below 423 K. At 1023 K, only CeO2 F-2g peak (at 449 cm(-1)) and O-2(-) species (at 1159 cm(-1))were observed on the surface. The reactivity of methane with the oxygen species was lower than that of ethane with the oxygen species

This is the final version. Available from NIHR Journals Library via the DOI in this record. The dataset associated with this article is located in ORE at: https://doi.org/10.24378/exe.564Background Diagnosis of lung cancer frequently occurs in its later stages. Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) could detect lung cancer early. Objectives To estimate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of LDCT lung cancer screening in high risk populations. Methods Clinical effectiveness A systematic review of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing LDCT screening programmes with usual care (no screening) or other imaging screening programme (such as chest X-ray (CXR)) was conducted. Bibliographic sources included MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library. Meta-analyses, including network meta-analyses, were performed. Cost-effectiveness An independent economic model employing discrete event simulation and using a natural history model calibrated to results from a large RCT was developed. There were twelve different population eligibility criteria and four intervention frequencies (single screen, triple screen, annual screening and biennial screening) and a no screening control arm. Results Clinical effectiveness Twelve RCTs were included, four of which currently contribute evidence on mortality. Meta-analysis of these demonstrated that LDCT with up to 9.80 years of follow-up was associated with a non-statistically significant decrease in lung cancer mortality (pooled RR 0.94, 95% CI 0.74 to 1.19). The findings also showed that LDCT screening demonstrated a non-statistically significant increasein all-cause mortality. Given the considerable heterogeneity detected between studies for both outcomes, the results should be treated with caution. Network meta-analysis including six RCTs was performed to assess the relative effectiveness of LDCT, CXR and usual care. The results showed that LDCT was ranked as the best screening strategy in terms of lung cancer mortality reduction. CXR had a 99.7% probability of being the worst intervention with usual care intermediate. Cost-effectiveness Screening programmes are predicted to be more effective than no screening, reduce lung cancer mortality and result in more lung cancer diagnoses. Screening programmes also increase costs. Screening for lung cancer is unlikely to be cost-effective at a threshold of £20,000/QALY, but may be cost-effective at a threshold of £30,000/QALY. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio for a single screen in smokers aged 60–75 years with at least a 3% risk of lung cancer is £28,169 per QALY. Sensitivity and scenario analyses were conducted. Screening was only cost-effective at a threshold of £20,000/QALY in a minority of analyses. Limitations Clinical effectiveness The largest of the included RCTs compared LDCT with CXR screening rather than no screening. Cost-effectiveness A representative cost to the NHS of lung cancer has not been recently estimated according to key variables such as stage at diagnosis. Certain costs associated with running a screening programme have not been included. Conclusions LDCT screening may be clinically effective in reducing lung cancer mortality but there is considerable uncertainty. There is evidence that a single round of screening could be considered cost-effective at conventional thresholds, but there is significant uncertainty about the effect on costs and the magnitude of benefits. Future work Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness estimates should be updated with the anticipated results from several ongoing RCTs (particularly NELSON).This report was commissioned by the NIHR Health Technology Assessment Programme as project number 14/151/0

Frequency Shift of Carbon-Nanotube-Based Mass Sensor Using Nonlocal Elasticity Theory

    Get PDF
The frequency equation of carbon-nanotube-based cantilever sensor with an attached mass is derived analytically using nonlocal elasticity theory. According to the equation, the relationship between the frequency shift of the sensor and the attached mass can be obtained. When the nonlocal effect is not taken into account, the variation of frequency shift with the attached mass on the sensor is compared with the previous study. According to this study, the result shows that the frequency shift of the sensor increases with increasing the attached mass. When the attached mass is small compared with that of the sensor, the nonlocal effect is obvious and increasing nonlocal parameter decreases the frequency shift of the sensor. In addition, when the location of the attached mass is closer to the free end, the frequency shift is more significant and that makes the sensor reveal more sensitive. When the attached mass is small, a high sensitivity is obtained

Geochemical characteristics and 40Ar- 39Ar ages of the amphibolites and gabbros in Tarlang area: Implications for tectonic evolution of the Chinese Altai

    Get PDF
Amphibolitic and gabbroic rocks occur in Tarlang area in Chinese Altay. Amphibolites are metamorphosed products of mafic magmatic rocks (SiO 2 = 45.42% - 52.96%) and contain high Al 2O 3 (13.14% - 17.92%), Fe 2O 3 T (9.08% - 16.88%) and TiO 2 (0.82% - 3.23%) contents. The amphibolite samples show relatively flat REE patterns, without significant fractionations of REEs (La/Yb N = 1.53 - 1.79). These samples are depleted in HFSEs slightly, with slightly Ti-Nb-Ta negative anomalies, which suggest a subtle relation to subduction-related environment. The gabbroic samples (SiO 2 = 46.96% - 49.86%) have intermediate TiO 2 (0.38% - 1.89%) and relatively low K 2 O contents (K 2 O = 0.34% - 1.03%), belonging to subalkali rocks (Na 2 O > K 2 O). They have relatively high Al 2O 3 (15.0% - 20.81%), CaO (10.13% - 11.60%) and moderate MgO (7.3% - 8.3% ) contents. The gabbroic samples show two types of REE patterns. One is characterized by slight fractionation of REEs (La/Yb N = 1.10 - 1.67) and weak Eu anomalies (δEu = 1.03 - 1.10), while the other is enriched in LREE s (La/Yb N = 5.97 - 6.39), with significantly positive Eu anomalies (δEu = 1.31 - 1.44), which may reflect accumulation of plagioclase in the magma chamber. These gabbroic rocks all exhibit Ti-Nb-Ta troughs and Pb-Sr spikes, also implying a subduction-related origin. The 40Ar/ 39Ar spectrum of the gabbroic sample is simple and flat (plateau age of 266.9 ± 4.2Ma; isochron age of 261 ± 23Ma), indicating that its K-Ar isotopic system was not seriously disturbed by subsequent thermal events and may reflect the intrusion time of the gabbro. However, 40Ar- 39Ar analysis of the amphibolite give rise to a saddle-like spectrum, and its youngest plateau (297.3 ± 6.1Ma) probably reflects the last metamorphic event. The difference on age and geochemistry between the amphibolitic and gabbroic rocks implies that they probably represent different mafic magma. The protolith of amphibolites probably formed in a seamount near a subduction zone and subsequently accreated to the Altai. The gabbro exhibits subduction-releted characteristics and was coeval with transtensional movement in the Chinese Altai, probably reflecting a tectonic transition in the Permian.阿爾泰塔爾浪地區出露一些斜長角閃巖和輝長巖。其中,斜長角閃巖為基性巖漿巖變質的產物,SiO_2含量為45.42%~52.96%,具有較高的Al_2O_3(13.14%~17.92%)、Fe_2O_3~T(9.08%~16.88%)和TiO_2(0.82%~3.23%)含量。 輝長巖SiO_2(46.96%~49.86%)含量稍低,TiO_2(0.38%~1.89%)變化較大,并富Al_2O_3(15.0%~20.81%)、CaO(10.13%~11.60%),具有中等至較高MgO含量(7.3%~8.3%)和相對較低的鉀含量(K_2O=0.34%~1.03%),屬亞堿性巖石系列(Na_2O>K_2O)。

Co3O4 Nanocrystals on Graphene as a Synergistic Catalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Catalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions are at the heart of key renewable energy technologies including fuel cells and water splitting. Despite tremendous efforts, developing oxygen electrode catalysts with high activity at low costs remains a grand challenge. Here, we report a hybrid material of Co3O4 nanocrystals grown on reduced graphene oxide (GO) as a high-performance bi-functional catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). While Co3O4 or graphene oxide alone has little catalytic activity, their hybrid exhibits an unexpected, surprisingly high ORR activity that is further enhanced by nitrogen-doping of graphene. The Co3O4/N-doped graphene hybrid exhibits similar catalytic activity but superior stability to Pt in alkaline solutions. The same hybrid is also highly active for OER, making it a high performance non-precious metal based bi-catalyst for both ORR and OER. The unusual catalytic activity arises from synergetic chemical coupling effects between Co3O4 and graphene.Comment: published in Nature Material
